"We Hold These Truths To Be Self Evident"

Tina Andrews weaves a passionate, behind the scenes account of one of the most controversial, highest rated miniseries in recent television history. It chronicles her personal and political odyssey as she sought to dramatize the hotly debated relationship between Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States and author of the Declaration of Independence, and Sally Hemings, his slave.

In 1983, Ms. Andrews set out to research this persistently secreted story, interviewing both Hemings and Jefferson descendants. Her labors produced both a play and a screenplay, which over the next fifteen years, endured twelve top level rejections, four option sales, three title changes and the criticism that Ms. Andrews had, "sullied the image of the great American icon".

Tina Andrews yet persevered and on January 27, 2000, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation announced that there was a, "long standing relationship between Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson", and that Jefferson indeed may have fathered at least one and perhaps all six of Hemings' children.

The miniseries, Sally Hemings - An American Scandal, aired two weeks later.
