The first presentation of blackface minstrelsy in the "New World" was probably by Lewis Hallam, who played a Negro drunkard in a play called, The Padlock (1769). Blackface minstrel shows became for profit productions after 1830, when white workmen dressed up as Negroes and smeared their faces with burnt cork or greasepaint, mimicking Negro musical and dance forms. These shows comically misappropriated African and African-American cultural forms, solely for the entertainment of white audiences. The parodies relied on a few stock characters and gross stereotypes, which included the Wench, a lascivious Negro woman played by a white man; Jim Crow, a doting, happy plantation slave; and Zip Coon, a Northern urban Negro man, who always failed miserably in his attempts to assimilate white upper-class speech and dress. Today, sadly, minstrelsy is nurtured and promulgated, by the descendants of Africans in American, now citizens, not, as in the past, through necessity or duress, but through expediency wrought by festering spiritual wounds and continued lack of education.
